NBC sets “The Wiz” as its next live musical and a Broadway revival planned
NBC will ease on down the road in “The Wiz.” NBC’s third live musical following Sound of Music and Peter Pan. Debuting December 3, the 7-time Tony winner and Stephen Sondheim favorite will be directed by Kenny Leon.
For those of you (like me) who are a bit iffy about another live musical by NBC, Bob Greenblatt brought “no bad news” saying that a Broadway revival is planned, aiming for the 2016-2017 season.
The iffy-ness, however, dropped for me when I heard that NBC partnered with Cirque du Soleil to co-produce. Hopefully, Cirque will know whom they are casting, and not get another pop singer who can’t act.
But honestly, I do not care if they have another pop singer in the lead, for it is “The Wiz.” With a catchy, poppy score, pop singers may do it some justice.
Don’t know “The Wiz” score? Take a listen to one of its most famous songs:
I am especially happy that NBC did not have the Wells Fargo wagon come down and do “The Music Man,” one of my personal favorites. If they did, we would have to sit through another pop-singer-sings-showtunes special.
Besides, it may be too soon after some teenagers have witnessed the bland Disney TV adaptation.
So cross your fingers that NBC will do justice to the piece, and that the Broadway revival will be a hit in the 2016-2017 season.
