Jess Glynne is the British singer-songwriter who attracted popularity after being featured on Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” and Route 94’s “My Love”. Both songs reached a number one position on UK music charts.
Her voice may be what makes her stand out from the crowd. She cites from artists such as Sam Cooke, Destiny’s Child, Whitney Houston among others for her vocal inspiration. She also cites Eminem, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar for her songwriting.
Glynne applied for X-Factor when she was 15 years old, but was rejected. After working at other companies and traveling the world, she got a job at a music management company, where she networked with many songwriters and music producers, refining her musical talent.
Glynne got the attention of Black Butter Records, who saw a piece that her and songwriter Jin Jin wrote, and they signed her to a publishing deal. Through this, she met many music managers and lawyers and signed a contract with Atlantic Records.
Glynne was approached by producer Route 94 about providing vocals for her song “My Love”, which she accepted. However, it contained a sample that, at the time, he was not allowed to use. The song was still featured on a DJ Annie Mac compilation, which caught the attention of band Clean Bandit, who approached her about providing vocals for their song “Rather Be.” She obliged, and the song debuted at number one on UK music charts, also the third fastest selling single and most streamed song of 2014. “My Love” was released early 2014, and also debuted at number one.
Her debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, will be released this month (exact dates below), and will feature both “Rather Be” and “My Love”, as well as her recent collaboration with Tinie Tempah, “Not Letting Go”, and her own singles “Hold My Hand”, “Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself”, “Right Here” and “Home”. It has 14 tracks (standard edition).
I think she will be a talent that we will be watching over the years. We haven’t heard many voices as different as hers in recent years and she has a long career ahead of her.
“I Cry When I Laugh” will be released on August 21st in the UK and Ireland, September 11th in the US and September 18th in Australia.
